HISTORY by Tony Howe: Orvisburg was formed when the Champion Lumber Co.
built a large sawmill here in 1888 and was named for Everett E. Orvis,
secretary of the lumber company. A post office opened in September 1889 and was originally spelled "Orvisburgh"
until it was renamed in 1892. Everett E. Orvis was first postmaster. The
sawmill was sold to the Cecil Lumber Co. in 1917, and again to the Southern
Lumber & Timber Co. in 1920. It finally closed in 1927, and the town
died out.

the commissary, hotel, and larger managers' houses at downtown
Orvisburg. The railroad depot appears at the far right of the photo. |
