Southern Railway was formed in 1894 by the
reorganization of the Richmond & Danville and East Tennessee Virginia
& Georgia Railroads. The owners of the Richmond & Danville and East Tennessee
Virginia
& Georgia obtained an interest in the New Orleans & Northeastern in 1890 paving the way for the
line to be included in the Southern Railway System in 1916. NO&NE
operated as a subsidiary of the Southern Railway from 1916 until it was
formally merged into the Alabama Great Southern in 1969.
