HISTORY by Tony Howe: Richard McLemore first settled here in 1831 from
South Carolina. When the Vicksburg & Meridian RR and Mobile & Ohio
RR met here, McLemore sold his land to L. A. Ragsdale and J. T. Ball, who
built a one-room depot, calling the new junction Meridian in 1854. After the
Civil War, Meridian quickly grew as a railroad town, and the county seat was
moved here from Marion in 1870.
