HISTORY by Tony
Howe:
Jayess was founded when a townsite was laid out in late
1911 by the Butterfield Lumber Company when the company's
railroad, the Natchez Columbia & Mobile Railroad, reached
this location. The name was chosen by Marguerite Butterfield
after her grandfather, J. S. Butterfield, president of the
lumber company. A post office was established at Jayess on
December 7, 1912. A 20'x24' depot with a 16'x24' platform
was completed by the railroad at Jayess in 1913. Shortly
thereafter, the town had developed and included a hotel, 4
stores, scores of houses, a church, and a public school. A
small sawmill was built at Jayess by a Mr. Alexander. |
