HISTORY by Tony Howe:
Derby was named for Captain Chester Derby, a local landowner, and was
listed in the first railroad timetable in 1884 after the line opened as
having a 64-car siding. It was lengthened to 72 cars in 1903. It was later
extended northward by 1943 to 87 cars.
