HISTORY by Gil Hoffman:
The Warrior River
Terminal Company was incorporated in Alabama on January 18, 1926, as the Port
of Birmingham Railway. On February 12, 1926, the name was changed to Warrior
River Terminal Company. On April 28, 1926, the company purchased the
property of the Ensley Southern Railroad. The Warrior River Terminal Company
was controlled by the Inland Waterways Corporation through ownership of its
capital stock.
The line extended
from a connection with the Birmingham Southern and the Southern Railway at
Ensley Junction (Fairfield), on the outskirts of the city of Birmingham, in
a northwesterly direction to Birmingport, a landing on the Little Warrior
River, 18.130 miles. The company also had trackage rights over 1.98 miles of
the Birmingham Southern at Ensley Junction.
The country
traversed for the first 6 miles was rolling, while the remainder was rough
and rugged. The line followed closely along Short Creek for the first few
miles. The principal industry was the manufacture of iron and steel. The
road derived most of its revenue from hauling ore, sulphur, timber, sugar
and other miscellaneous commodities from the Inland Waterways
Corporation’s boats operating on the Warrior River to its connections at
Ensley Junction. Most of the ore was destined for the Tennessee Coal &
Iron Company, owners of large mills near Birmingham.
In December 1928
the main line was laid chiefly with 75 and 80-lb. rail. The tracks were
ballasted principally with cinders and crushed slag.
