HISTORY by Tony Howe:
Tallahala started out as the logging camp of the Tallahala Lumber Co. Their sawmill was located at Ora, a mile north of Collins, and they built a logging railroad from Hattiesburg to Tallahala in 1917 to log a tract of timber originally bought for the old Tallahala Lumber Co. mill at Ellisville that burned in 1908 and not rebuilt. This logging railroad and timber was sold to the Major-Sowers Saw Mill Co., who built a large sawmill at Tallahala to cut the timber and leased the railroad between Hattiesburg and Tallahala to the Mississippi Central. When the sawmill shut down in 1929, the railroad was quickly abandoned. INDUSTRY- |
