HISTORY by Tony Howe: 

Hazlehurst was founded when the New Orleans Jackson & Great Northern Railroad built through here in the 1850's. It was named after George Hazlehurst, chief engineer with the railroad. 

INDUSTRY -

Hazlehurst Compress & Manufacturing Co.- existed 1887 to 1930's

Hazlehurst Oil Mill & Fertilizer Co.- established 1890, fertilizer factory added 1902, closed in 1950's

Merchants Grocery Co.- 1907-? now gone

Hazlehurst Water & Light Plant- 1902-present

Hazlehurst Box Factory- established by 1910, later to Southern Package Corp.
