History by Gil Hoffman:

Chunky Mill

By March 1900 the Tallahata Lumber Company, a partnership composed of D. L. Ragland and A. Poitevent, was operating a sawmill with a cutting capacity of about 25,000 feet per day at Chunky Station, on the Alabama & Vicksburg. The plant included a planing mill and dry kilns. In early 1903 a new band mill was placed in operation with a cutting capacity of 50,000 feet per day.

The company was incorporated at Chunky, Newton County, on April 16, 1906 by D. L. Ragland, M. G. Norton, L. G. Sears, R. B. Bracken and S. H. Bracken with authorized capital stock of $60,000. The lumber produced by the company was sold through the Chicago Lumber & Coal Company, of St. Louis, Missouri. Plant and timber of the partnership was transferred to the company on May 3, 1906.

In 1914 operations were moved to Halsell, Choctaw County, Alabama. The company also operated a mill at Montrose, Jasper County.

Montrose Mill:

The Tallahatta Lumber Company, of Chunky, Newton County, built a 40,000 feet daily capacity sawmill at Montrose, Jasper County which began operation in July 1914. R. M. Wood, secretary and treasurer of the Tallahatta Lumber Company, was manager of this mill.

In October 1916 the mill was leased to L. G. Sears, of the Arkomiss Lumber Company, of Cleveland, Ohio, and operated under the name "Montrose Saw Mill Company." Sears was also one of the stockholders in the Tallahatta Lumber Company.

On July 30, 1919, the sawmill, logging railroad and equipment and timber rights in Jasper County were sold to George W. Howell, of St. Louis, Missouri, for about $78,000.
