HISTORY by Gil Hoffman:
The Terminal Railway,
Alabama State Docks was under the jurisdiction of the Alabama State
Docks Commission, and began operating on December 1, 1927.
The line extended
frm the docks at the foot of Earl Street in Mobile in a northeasterly
direction to North Mobile. This
was a switching road. Large freight yards were maintained by the company and
interchange was provided with all railroads entering Mobile. The railroad
consisted of 5.619 miles of main line and 30.487 miles of yard tracks and
sidings.
Grading on the
line was light. The tracks were laid chiefly with new 90-lb. rail. The
tracks were ballasted, principally with crushed slag. There was one metal
bridge over Three Mile Creek. South of Three Mile Creek the railroad was
located on filled land adjacent to the Mobile River.
The land north of the creek was generally level.
The railroad
company had trackage rights over 2.76 miles of industry tracks north of
Mobile, owned by the Chickasaw Shipbuilding & Car Company. It granted
trackage rights to the Alabama, Tennessee & Northern Railroad over 3.76
miles of road near Mobile and to the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad
over 2.92 miles of road near Mobile.
