History
by Gil Hoffman:
The
Sibley. Lake Bisteneau & Southern Railway was incorporated in
Louisiana on July 7, 1900, to construct, lease and operate a railroad
extending in a southerly direction from Sibley, LA, and for leasing and
operating steamship lines. The Sibley. Lake Bisteneau & Southern, the
Louisiana & Pacific and the Woodworth and Louisiana Central made up what
was called the Shreveport. Alexandria & Southwestern system. The SLB&S
operated the railroad of the Globe Lumber Company from 1900 to June 30,
1906, at which time it purchased the property by issuing $100,000 in capital
stock to the Globe Lumber Company. A majority of the capital stock in
the Sibley, Lake Bisteneau & Southern and the Globe Lumber Company was
owned by the R. A. Long interests of Kansas City, Missouri.
The
Sibley. Lake Bisteneau & Southern connected at Sibley, LA. with the
Vicksburg, Shreveport & Pacific and the Louisiana & Arkansas
railways, and extended southward for 31 miles through Webster and Bienville
parishes, ending about 3 miles beyond a point known as Camp Long. South of
Camp Long there were extensive logging tracks. The entire road was
originally built as a logging road. The line was laid with 40 and 60-lb.
rail. The country traversed was rolling timber land.
The
section of railroad from Sibley to Yellow Pine, LA was constructed by the Bisteneau
Lumber Company prior to 1898. Construction by the Globe Lumber
Company, Ltd., was as follows: Yellow Pine to south line of Webster
Parish, during 1898-1900, 6.0 miles; South line of Webster Parish to MP 17,
in 1901, 6.0 miles; MP 17 to MP 18.5, in 1902, 1.5 miles; MP 18.5 to MP
22.5, in 1903, 4.0 miles; MP 22.5 to MP 27.5, in 1904, 5.0 miles; MP 29.5 to
MP28.5, in 1905, 1.0 miles, for a total of 28.5 miles. The SLB&S
constructed the line from MP 28.5 to Summit, LA, 1.0 miles, in 1908, for a
total of 29.5 miles..
In
1910 the equipment of the Sibley, Lake Bisteneau & Southern consisted of
6 locomotives. 2 passenger cars, 7 freight cars and 106 logging cars. Three
of the locomotives and all of the freight and logging cars were leased from
the parent lumber company.
The
road was abandoned in May 1942.
