HISTORY by Gil Hoffman:
The Seaboard
Manufacturing Company built a large yellow pine sawmill at Fairford in
Washington County, AL about 1888 together with a 36-inch gauge logging
railroad. This railroad was chartered in Alabama on January 20, 1890, as the
Seaboard Railroad of Alabama. The line was completed from Nannahubba,
AL northward to Tuscarora, AL, 24.25 miles, in 1891. The line was extended
to Turners, AL, 33 miles, in 1898.
S. T. Prince of Mobile,
AL was appointed receiver of the railroad on July 6, 1896, and the road sold
at foreclosure on May 10, 1897, to trustees of the bondholders. The receiver
was discharged on June 7, 1897, but continued to operate the railroad as
agent for the purchasers. On January 17, 1900, the company was succeeded by
the Tombigbee & Northern Railway.
The Tombigbee &
Northern Railway was succeeded by the Tombigbee Valley Railroad on
March 5, 1904. The railroad was widened to standard gauge by June 1904.
