History by Gil Hoffman: In
March 1903, W. L. Robinson began buying timber in the vicinity of Gloster,
Amite County, for a lumbering operation. A mill site was purchased in
February 1905 in the northern outskirts of Gloster, on the Yazoo &
Mississippi Valley Railroad. During 1905 a sawmill plant and logging
railroad, extending from the Y. & M. V. eastward, were constructed. On
December 5, 1905, C. E. Bates became a partner in the business, buying a
one-forth interest. The business then was operated as the W. L. Robinson
Lumber Company, a copartnership. On
June 9, 1913, the sawmill plant, logging railroad and railroad logging
equipment were sold to the Valley Lumber Company, of Camden, AR, for
$33,000.
