History
by Gil Hoffman:
The
Pine Hill Lumber Company was originally a partnership composed of W. F.
Tibbetts, L. A. Tibbetts and J. M. Caldwell. The company began buying timber
near Wautubbee, Clarke County in August 1902. A sawmill was built at
Wautubbee which included a planing mill and dry kilns. On August 20, 1907,
The Pine Hill Lumber Company was incorporated at Wautubbee by H. B. McGarrah,
of Reynoldsville, PA, and James O. Craig, of Sligo, PA, with authorized
capital stock of $30,000. H. B. McGarrah was president and F. D. Smith,
secretary.
W. O. Chipman and J. M. Broach, members of the Meridian Lumber Company, of
Meridian, MS, purchased the assets of the Pine Hill Lumber Company, at
Wautubbee, Clarke County, on April 23, 1910 for $12,500. The purchase
included sawmill, logging railroad and equipment and about 3,600 acres of
timber in Clarke County, mostly east of the New Orleans & Northeastern
Railroad. The plant was operated as the B. C. Lumber Company, a
partnership.
In November 1912 the portable assets of the company (sawmill, logging
railroad and equipment) were sold to E. S. Bostick, acting as agent for the
Bostick Brothers, of Meridian.
