HISTORY:
The Mississippi Delta Railroad was formed in 1985 to acquire the
rail line from Swan Lake to Clarksdale to Jonestown, MS from Illinois
Central Gulf RR. It was owned by Gulf & Ohio Railways. The segment from
Lula to Jonestown was owned by Delta Oil Mill at Jonestown and operated by
Mississippi Delta RR.
Gulf & Ohio sought to abandon the entire line about 2000. Instead,
Gulf & Ohio reached an agreement for Coahoma County to buy the line and
Gulf & Ohio continued to operate the line until June 30, 2001. At that
time C&J Railroad Co. began operating the line.
In early 2019, Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, LLC was
formed and began operations of the Mississippi Delta RR.
