History
by Gil Hoffman:
R.
A. Foote and E. L. McGowan purchased the sawmill of the W. F. Smith Lumber
Company at Shivers, Simpson County, on the Gulf & Ship Island Mendenhall
Branch, on January 20, 1906 for $20,500. To operate this property, the
McGowan Company was incorporated at Shivers on March 2, 1906 by R. A. Foote,
E. L. McGowan, W. C. McGowan and Charles Little with authorized capital
stock of $25,000. The McGowan Company soon installed a logging railroad, as
the Smith mill has been logged entirely by ox teams.
On
March 16, 1908 the property was sold to R. A. Foote for $25,000 in cash. At
that time Foote was president of the McGowan Company and Harry Robinson was
secretary and treasurer. The sale included the logging railroad and logging
equipment.
On
January 16, 1909 the McGowan mill and all its holdings were sold to J. T.
Jones for $17,000 which was applied to the debt Foote owed Jones.
