HISTORY by Gil Hoffman:

The New Orleans & Gulf Railroad was formed by the consolidation and merger on October 29, 1886, of the Mississippi, Terre Aux Boeufs & Lake Railroad and the New Orleans & Gulf Railroad. The former of these was the owner of a line of railroad running from New Orleans to Shell Beach on Lake Borgne; the latter was chartered to build a line 36 miles in length from Poydras, a point on the M. T. A. B. & L. RR, to Point-a-la-Hache, with branches aggregating 2.5 miles. Track laying began January 10, 1887, and the line was completed the following June. In July 1887 the company purchased three steamboats and the Red River & Coast Line Steamboat Company, operating from New Orleans to the Jetties. This purchase included the United States mail contract. Default was made on November 1, 1889, and a receiver appointed on May 2, 1890.

The New Orleans & Southern Railroad was chartered on September 15, 1891, as successor to the New Orleans & Gulf Railroad, whose property was sold under foreclosure on March 6, 1891.A receiver was appointed on June 10, 1895, and the railroad was leased to the New Orleans & Western Railroad on February 1, 1896, for a period of one years unless sold under foreclosure.

The Louisiana Southern Railroad was organized as successor to the New Orleans & Southern Railroad whose property was sold under foreclosure on October 26, 1896. By 1899 the railroad was cut back to Belair, LA, 29 miles.

The New Orleans, Texas & Mexico leased the Louisiana Southern from July 1911, until Missouri Pacific control of the Gulf Coast Lines on January 1, 1925. After purchase of the Gulf Coast Lines, the Missouri Pacific returned the Louisiana Southern to its owners. From 1911 to 1916, the NOT&M operated and maintained the Louisiana Southern equipment, though the Louisiana Southern lettering was maintained. After formation of the Gulf Coast Lines in 1916, the NOT&M still retained the Louisiana Southern road numbers, but added the inscription GULF COAST LINES across the center of the tenders (all Gulf Coast Line engines acquired this lettering).  The initials “L. S.” were then applied to the locomotive cabs.
