HISTORY by Gil Hoffman:
The
White-Grandin Lumber Company built a double circular mill costing
$300,000 in 1919-20 at the new town of Slagle, LA. The company was owned by
the Missouri Lumber & Land Exchange Company.
The
Leesville, Slagle & Eastern Railroad was incorporated in
Louisiana on February 22, 1919. The line extended in an easterly direction
from a connection with the KCS at Leesville to Slagle, 10.35 miles, all in
Vernon Parish. The outstanding capital stock of $125,000 in the railroad was
held by the stockholders of the lumber company.
The
line was built during 1919 and 1920 with operations beginning on April 15,
1920. The railroad was constructed primarily to transport lumber and other
forest products of the White-Grandin Lumber Company from its mill at the
newly constructed sawmill town of Slagle.
As
a result of cutting out the available timber, the sawmill of the lumber
company at Slagle ceased operation in the latter part of 1930. With no
further business, on December 15, 1931, the railroad applied to the ICC for
permission to abandon its entire line. Permission was received on February
10, 1932.
