History by Gil Hoffman: The Lamar Hardwood Company was incorporated at Horton Switch, Clarke County, on July 18, 1923, by V. M. Scanlan, Joe B. Semmes, J. K. Denham, all of Hattiesburg, and J. H. Grimmett, of Quitman, with authorized capital stock of $200,000, which was  raised to $250,000 on Aug. 11, 1923. In late summer of 1923 a bandmill with a cutting capacity of 40,000 feet per day was completed at Horton Switch. Timber holdings were in the "Alligator Swamp," along the Chickasawhay River south of Quitman. J. H. Grimmett was general manager of the operation. In December 1926 the band mill at Horton Switch was moved to Bogalusa, La., as part of the mill of the Lamar Lumber Company, then under construction.
