HISTORY by Gil Hoffman and Tony Howe:
The
Kentwood & Eastern Railroad, leased from the Brooks-Scanlon
Company on July 1, 1906, was never incorporated. The initial line of
approximately 3 miles was built in 1890 by the Isabella Lumber Company,
which extended it from time to time to a total length of about 8 miles.
On
November 1, 1895, all of the timber holdings and other properties of the
Isabella Lumber Company were sold at a United States marshal’s sale for
$32,500 to the Banner Lumber Company, Ltd., of Kentwood, LA, which
operated the railroad as a logging line. The Banner Lumber Company extended
the line over a period of time to a total length of 30.02 miles.
On
November 1, 1905, the Banner Lumber Company sold all of its holdings to the Brooks-Scanlon
Company, of Minnesota, for $450,000, which included the timberlands,
railroad and equipment and sawmill at Kentwood. On May 14, 1907, the
Brooks-Scanlon Company sold its railroad rolling stock to the Kentwood &
Eastern Railway for a lump sum of $37,500.
The
Kentwood & Eastern Railway was incorporated in Louisiana for 99
years on December 5, 1905. The first portion of the road was opened in 1905,
and subsequent portions during 1906-10. The company leased the Kentwood
& Eastern Railroad on July 1, 1906, at an annual rental of $1,000
and taxes. The
narrow gauge line from Kentwood to Hackley was abandoned about 1918. The
standard gauge line from Kentwood to Pineview was extended to a connection
with the Houlton Brothers railroad north of Uneedus, and trackage rights
were obtained by the K&E to run to Houltonville, near Madisonville. The
purpose for this agreement was to help supply much-needed lumber for the
construction of wood ships during WWI in the Madisonville area.
Brooks-Scanlon began purchasing timber in the Pacific Northwest and in
Florida several years before the mill at Kentwood finally cut out in 1922.
Some of the standard gauge equipment at Kentwood was transferred to the
Brooks-Scanlon operation near Perry, Florida.

36" gauge K&E 2-6-0 No. 28 was bought new from Baldwin in
1913. It was later sold to the famed Linville River in North Carolina. |
Standard gauge K&E Heisler No. 3 was fitted with an unusual
auxiliary water car, making the 2-truck engine look like a 3-truck
