The Memphis Selma &
Brunswick Railroad was formed in 1881 as a merger of the Memphis Holly
Springs & Selma RR and the Selma Marion & Memphis RR, neither of
which had laid any track yet. The Memphis Selma & Brunswick RR
completed a railroad from Memphis to Holly Springs, MS, a distance of 43
miles, by 1885. On November 14, 1885, it was sold to the Memphis
Birmingham & Atlantic Railroad.
Kansas City, Memphis
& Birmingham Railroad was incorporated February 18, 1886, and was the
consolidation of the Memphis & Birmingham Railroad, the Memphis &
Southeastern Railroad, and the Memphis, Birmingham & Atlantic
Railroad. Only the last one had any operating trackage. The
KCM&B completed the line from Memphis to Birmingham in 1887. A branch
from Aberdeen Jct. (near Amory) to Aberdeen was completed in 1888. The KCM&B was
leased to the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Memphis Ry in 1896. The KCFS&M
was purchased by the St. Louis & San Francisco RR (Frisco) in 1901 and officially
merged into the St. Louis-San Francisco in 1928.
