HISTORY:

The Kosciusko & Southwestern Railway was formed in 1998 to operate the former Illinois Central Railroad branch between Aberdeen Junction (near Durant) to Munson's Crossing (near Kosciusko). The line was bought by the Mississippi Department of Transportation and leased to the Kosciusko & Southwestern.

On July 28, 2011, the Grenada Railway, Kosciusko & Southwestern's only rail connection at Aberdeen Junction, filed an embargo, due to a bridge problem, which took a portion of their line out of service. This meant that no traffic would be accepted to or from points within that section. With no rail service available to move cars in or out, the Kosciusko & Southwestern was essentially isolated. With no revenue and no foreseeable prospect for resumption of service on the Grenada Railway which connected the Kosciusko & Southwestern to the rest of the nation's rail system, the contract with the state was terminated and the company filed for dissolution. The state still owns the abandoned trackage still in place but overgrown.
