History by Gil Hoffman: On October 23, 1903, Sam W. Hoskins, of Brookhaven, MS, purchased a sawmill at Coles, Amite County and 400 acres of land from William R. Taylor, of New Orleans, LA, for $3,000. The mill had been built about 1898 by J. T. Daniel, who purchased the same 400 acres of land on August 26, 1898 from W. T. Daniel. On December 19, 1902. Daniel sold the property to William R. Taylor. On April 18, 1906, Sam Hoskins took Ike W. Hoskins in as a partner in the business.  The sawmill was on the Y. & M. V. Railroad and had a cutting capacity of 20,000 feet per day, of longleaf yellow pine. Logging was done by a tram road, apparently built by the Hoskins. The 400 acres of timber were located within a few miles of the mill. On April 26, 1910, the mill and same 400 acres of timber land were sold to the Foster Creek Lumber Company.
