History by Gil Hoffman: On
November 23, 1906, the Fain-Fagin Lumber Company, of Hattiesburg,
purchased the Grouch sawmill from E. L. and W. G. McGowan for $12,872. The
McGowans had bought this sawmill from Mrs. Ella Grouch and W. S. Grouch on
November 1, 1906. The mill was on the Mobile, Jackson & Kansas City
Railroad at Belleville in Perry County. The Fain-Fagin Lumber Company was
composed of J. B. Fain and H. N. Fagin. A logging railroad was built by the
new owners in early 1908 and was apparently discontinued in October 1914
when most of the rails were sold to the Brown Lumber Company, of Hiwannee,
jn Wayne County. By February 1910 ownership of the company had passed to L. D. Hammett and F. G. Carley. These men continued to operate the mill until December 1920 when the mill site and remaining timber lands were sold to J. E. Golden, Jr., of Forrest County.
