History by Gil Hoffman and Tony Howe: The new hardwood mill of the Eastman-Gardiner Hardwood Company, at Laurel, Miss., began cutting on October 1, 1917. The mill specialized in red gum and magnolia, but also cut white and red oak, poplar, hickory and white cane ash. J. W. Bailey was president and general manager of the company. Logging operations were around Sandersville, north of Laurel. The logging railroad at Sandersville was abandoned in 1928 after the timber was cut. The mill continued to operate on logs brought in by truck for several years. The mill was sold to the Bailey Lumber Co. on December 31, 1943.
