HISTORY by Gil Hoffman:
The
East Louisiana Railroad was incorporated in Louisiana on July 7,
1887, to build and operate a railroad from Pearl River, LA to Abita Springs,
LA and beyond to Covington, LA and other points in Louisiana and
Mississippi. The main line from Pearl River, LA to Abita Springs, LA, 20
miles, was purchased in 1887 from John Poitevent and J. A. Favre. The line
from Abita Springs to Covington, LA, 4.20 miles, was built during 1887 and
1888. The branch from Mandeville Junction to Mandeville, LA was begun in
1888 and completed on May 29, 1892. Several short branch lines were built
between 1901 and 1904. The line from Ramsay, LA to Horse Branch, LA, 4.68
miles, was purchased from the Greenlaw Lumber Company in 1904.
The
company was sold to the New Orleans & Great Northern Railroad on
June 1, 1905 and absorbed by that line.
