The Delta Southern Railway was incorporated on August 15, 1904 by the Southern Railway in Mississippi to build branches off of its east-west line from Columbus to Greenville. The Delta Southern took over the Southern's branch running south from Stoneville to Percy and extended it to Richey in September 1906. Delta Southern built a branch northward from Elizabeth to Napanee by March 1906, and extended it north to Kerg's Mill by September 1907. A branch was built southward from Itta Bena to Belzoni in October 1906. The company intended to connect the branches by building between Richey and Belzoni, but this never happened. Southern Railway in Mississippi operated the branches.
