History
by Gil Hoffman:
The
Churchill-Milton Lumber Company, was organized at Louisville, KY in
1914 by John Churchill and T. Smith Milton. Churchill was president and
Milton, secretary and treasurer. The company first operated a wholesale
lumber yard at New Albany, IN. In 1915 they purchased a hardwood mill at
Glendora, MS. The output of this mill was too small, so in November
1916, the company began construction of a double-band hardwood mill at
Greenwood in Leflore County, MS. The Greenwood mill was completed and
placed in operation in June 1917. Cutting capacity was about 100,000
feet per day. The company also operated an older hardwood mill at
Glendora, MS.
T. Smith
Milton died on October 14, 1917, of typhoid fever and malaria, contracted
while visiting the Churchill-Milton mills in Mississippi. He was 38 years
old. Soon after Milton’s
death, company headquarters were moved to Greenwood, MS from Louisville, KY.
This move was short lived, because in July 1919, company headquarters were
moved back to Louisville, KY.
Logging of
the Greenwood mill was initially done by river, using the company’s
own barges and boats, but in the spring of 1919 the company purchased the
logging railroad and equipment of the Garrett-Turpin Lumber Company
at Greenwood.
According to
the Mercantile Agency Reference Book, the Churchill-Milton sawmill at
Greenwood operated through 1920, then shut down. The Glendora mill closed
about 1919.
