HISTORY by Tony Howe:
The Baton Rouge Hammond & Eastern Railroad was incorporated on May
29, 1900 to build a railroad from Baton Rouge to Hammond and Covington, Lou.
and east towards a point on the Pearl River or the Gulf of Mexico. It was
planned to meet a railroad called the Gulfport & Western RR that was in
the planning stages at the time but was never built. The Baton Rouge Hammond
& Eastern was completed from Baton Rouge to Covington, 64.949 miles, and
opened on February 26, 1908. By that time the New Orleans Great Northern
Railroad had completed their Shore Line Branch from Slidell to Covington,
providing an eastern connection for the BRH&E. Illinois Central Railroad
acquired control of the Baton Rouge Hammond & Eastern about 1906 and it
was operated by IC subsidiary Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad from
the beginning.
