History
by Gil Hoffman and Tony Howe:
The Pearl River Lumber Co. built a large mill on the outskirts of Brookhaven
in 1899 and built a standard gauge railroad eastward. The community that
grew up around the mill became known as Pearlhaven. The railroad was
incorporated as the Brookhaven & Pearl River Railway on November 4,
1904, and completed to Monticello. The lumber company came under the
ownership of the Goodyear syndicate, owners of the Great Southern Lumber Co.
The Pearlhaven mill was finally shut
down on Dec. 26, 1910. The B&PR was sold to the Illinois Central
Railroad on December 29, 1910, who continued to operate the branch
until it was abandoned in late 1928.
