HISTORY by Gil Hoffman:

The Arkansas & Southeastern Railroad was incorporated on Nov. 15, 1904, with $500,000 in capital stock fully paid in. The railroad was laid with 35 and 60-lb rail extending from Randolph, La. , in a southeasterly direction about 28 miles to Farmerville. At Randolph the line connected with the Rock Island and at Farmerville with the Iron Mountain. At McKay, 17 miles from the mill, the A&SE connected with the unincorporated logging road of the Summit Lbr. Co. The lumber company had trackage rights over the A&SE using 3 locomotives to haul logs.

The line was constructed several years before the incorporation of the A&SE and was built to serve the mill of the Summit Lbr. Co. at Randolph and was controlled by that company through ownership of the majority of its capital stock.

A mixed train which carried a few passengers was run daily in each direction. The railroad also issued a time table. No mail or express was hauled.

In 1911 the equipment consisted of 2 locomotives, 18 flat cars, 1 combination car, 1 motor car and 73 log cars.

The Summit Lbr. Co. went bankrupt in mid-1915 and its property was sold at public auction at Randolph on July 17, 1915. This included 3 locomotives and 24 miles of tramroad. The mill was destroyed by fire in May 1916. The property was sold at foreclosure in October 1916 to the Security Trust Co., of Detroit, Mich.
