HISTORY:
The Alabama Central Railroad Co. was incorporated in Alabama on June 22,
1871 and acquired 77.3 miles of railroad from Selma, Alabama to York,
Alabama from the purchasers of the Selma & Meridian Railroad Co. at the
foreclosure sale of the Selma & Meridian Railroad Co.'s assets on May 1,
1871. The line had been constructed by the Alabama & Mississippi Rivers
Railroad Co. between 1852 and 1864 and sold to the Selma & Meridian
Railroad on November 29, 1864.
The Alabama Central Railroad constructed 13.77 miles of railroad between
York, Alabama and Lauderdale, Mississippi in 1878 and acquired trackage
rights over the Mobile & Ohio Railroad between Lauderdale and Meridian,
Mississippi, a distance of 18 miles.
The Alabama Central Railroad was sold to the East Tennessee, Virginia
& Georgia Railroad on June 15, 1881. ETV&G became part of the
Southern Railway on July 4, 1894. The branch between York and Lauderdale was
abandoned in 1899.
