The Alabama &
Northwestern Railroad was incorporated in Alabama on January 8, 1912,
for the purpose of purchasing or constructing and operating in the
southern part of the State of Alabama. The date of organization was
January 8, 1912. Authorized and outstanding capital stock was $160,000,
the majority of which was owned by John T. Cochrane.
The line
extended from Pine Hill, AL in a general westerly direction to Coxheath,
AL, 24.373 miles. It connected with the Southern Railway at Pine Hill. The
country traversed was slightly rolling. The track was laid with 50 and
60-lb. rail, both new and relay, with full earth ballast. There were 55
timber bridges on the line. The shop was at Pine Hill, AL.
About 16 miles
of road, extending from Pine Hill to Van Sale, AL, was purchased from the
Vredenburgh Saw Mill Company on January 8, 1912. This line had been built
in 1885 as a logging road and was sold in 1903 to the Vredenburgh Saw Mill
Company, which operated a sawmill at Pine Hill that cut out in 1911.The
remaining 9.373 miles of line was built partly by company forces and
partly by the Cox Lumber Company.
The main
business of the railroad was hauling lumber products. By the early 1930s
most of the timber near the line had been cut and business was in a steady
decline. Passenger service was discontinued in 1932. On March 16, 1934,
the railroad company applied to the ICC for permission to abandon its
entire line. At that time the railroad owned 2 secondhand locomotives and
a caboose and rented freight cars, as needed, from the Southern Railway.
Two round trips weekly were made. Permission for abandonment was given on
June 23, 1934.
