HISTORY by Gil Hoffman and Tony Howe:
The
Arkansas, Louisiana & Gulf Railway was chartered July 20, 1906,
in Arkansas and Louisiana to build a railroad from Monroe, LA to Pine
Bluff, AR, with a branch from Rolfe Junction to Crossett, AR, a distance of
143.0 miles. The road was completed from Monroe, LA to Hamburg, AR, and from
Rolfe Junction to Crossett, AR, and was opened on October 1, 1908. It was
controlled by the Southern Development Company through ownership of 99% of
the capital stock.
On
May 29, 1913, the entire property of the company passed into the hands of
James M. Parker, as receiver, by request of the trustee for the bondholders
for non-payment on bonds as provided for in mortgage. The United States
District court order the road to be sold for no less than $200.000.
The
Arkansas & Louisiana Midland Railway was incorporated November
30, 1915, in Louisiana, as successor to the Arkansas, Louisiana & Gulf
Railway, which was sold at foreclosure on September 15, 1915. Effective
December 1, 1915, the company leased the Ashley, Drew & Northern Railway
from Crossett to Monticello, AR, 41.12 miles. The branch to Hamburg was
abandoned about 1920, and the lease of the AD&N was terminated in March
1920.
The
railroad was sold to Georgia-Pacific and renamed to the Arkansas
Louisiana & Mississippi Railroad on September 27, 1991.
Genesee & Wyoming, Inc bought the line in January 2004.
