HISTORY by Tony Howe:
Washington was one of the oldest settlements in Adams County, and was
named for George Washington. The seat of territorial government was located
here in 1802, 15 years before Mississippi became a state. When the Natchez
& Eastern Ry (Mississippi Central Railroad) was built in 1906, it missed
Washington by a little over a mile. The railroad built a spur and depot at
the point closest to the town, and called it Washington.
