HISTORY by Tony Howe:
Hawkes was primarily a sawmill town that grew up around the sawmill of
the W. S. Carter Lumber Co. This mill was sold to the Louise Lumber Co. in
1911, and finally shut down in 1915. The town mostly died out after the mill
closed. A passing track was located here on the railroad, and continues to
be used today.
