History by Gil Hoffman: The
Progress Lumber Company was incorporated at Hattiesburg, Perry County
on December 20, 1907, by J. R. Flint, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; J. C.
Tompkins, of Hattiesburg; C. H. Armbrecht, of Hattiesburg; E. H. Stoner, of
Pittsburgh, and C. E. Bellamy, of Hattiesburg. Flint and Stoner were members
of the Flint, Erving & Stoner Company, of Pittsburgh, and Armbrecht and
Tompkins were members of the Armbrecht Lumber Company, of Hattiesburg.
Authorized capital stock was $20,000. In
January 1906, Flint, Erving & Stoner put up the money for J.
J. Haney of Hattiesburg to move his mill on the Mississippi Central at
Eaton, Lamar County, to Stoner, on the Gulf & Ship Island Columbia
Branch, between Goss and Hathorn. In return, Haney mortgaged his timber in
northern Marion County to Flint, Erving & Stoner. Haney defaulted on
this mortgage and the mill passed to Flint, Erving & Stoner, who deeded
it to the Progress Lumber Company on January 4, 1909. This plant cut
out in the spring of 1910. After
the Stoner mill of the Progress Lumber Company cut out in the spring
of 1910, a new tract of longleaf yellow pine timber was purchased 14 miles
south of Columbia, MS, and a new circular sawmill of 65,000 feet daily
cutting capacity was built on the New Orleans Great Northern Railroad at
Sweetwater Station, Hickman Post Office, Marion County. This mill was
completed in June 1910 and cut out in September 1913.
