History by Gil Hoffman: The
J. C. Pearson Lumber Company was incorporated at Lumberton, Lamar
County, on August 25, 1905 by J. C. Pearson, J. H. Hinton and J. W. Hinton
with authorized capital stock of $50,000. The company operated a single
circular sawmill with cutting capacity of 30,000 feet per day at Enloe,
three miles north of Lumberton, on the west side of the New Orleans &
Northeastern Railroad. The facility also included one dry kiln. Construction
of a logging railroad began in August 1905. In January 1908 the company went into receivership, probably as a result of the Panic of 1907. The court appointed W. W. Pigford and R. W. Hinton as receivers. In December 1908 the Pearson mill closed down, and finally, on November 17, 1909 the sawmill equipment, one locomotive, eight log cars and a dry kiln were sold to the Komp Machine Works, of Hattiesburg.
