History
by Gil Hoffman:
The Monarch Lumber Company built a sawmill on the New Orleans, Mobile
& Chicago Railroad, at Monarch, in April 1916, and operated on timber
owned by W. G. Lancaster, owner of the old Monarch Lumber Company. N.
McKinstry was the general manager.
The mill cut out about February 1919. The company then bought a tract of
timber on the Gulf, Mobile & Northern, at McLain, Greene County, and
moved its operations there.
