History by Gil Hoffman: The
Lyndon Lumber Company was incorporated "near Wingate,"
Perry County, on May 9, 1903, by R. T. Sleeper, W.
M. Hemeter, D. D. Carter, W. P. Martin and J. W. Rush with paid-in capital
stock of $50,000. Although not an incorporator, J. R. Buckwalter, from
Pennsylvania, became the major stockholder of the company, the president and
general manager. In 1903 a circular sawmill cutting about 50,000 feet per
day was built at Wingate, on the Mobile, Jackson & Kansas City Railroad.
Employment was about 100 men. In
1911 the Lyndon mill cut out, after which the mill equipment was put up for
sale. About two years earlier J. R. Buckwalter had established a new
lumbering operation at Union, in Newton County. On February 1, 1912, the
cut-over lands and mill site of the company were sold to Ellis B. Cooper for
$1.75 per acre.
