History by Gil Hoffman: W.
W. Lambert & Company was
a partnership composed of W. W. Lambert and H. E. Allen. About 1898 a
sawmill plant, which included a planing mill and dry kilns, was built on
the south edge of Poplarville. On July 22, 1901 the sawmill and planing
mill were completely destroyed by fire. Instead of rebuilding, on May 27,
1902 the company sold all its lands in Pearl River County, logging
railroad and rolling stock to the Poplarville Lumber Company, of which
Lambert and Allen were members. W. W. Lambert had formerly operated a sawmill at Glade, south of Poplarville, in partnership with J. H. Mills. This mill began sawing in 1893. Before that these two men had operated a sawmill near the Coosa River, at Miles, Alabama. About 1895 he built a small mill at Saults, three miles north of Lacey, which lasted until 1897. In March of 1897 the Lambert family moved to Poplarville. H.
E. Allen was from Paulding, Ohio and came to Pearl River County about 1891
to manage the new mill of the Poplarville Lumber Company, at Poplarville.
