History by Gil Hoffman: On
October 26, 1909, the Lamar Lumber Company bought the sawmill and logging
railroad of the A. G. Little Lumber Company at Clyde, Lamar County. The
sawmill had a cutting capacity of 50,000 feet per day. No timber came with
the Little mill as the Lamar Lumber Company already had its own timber
supply, accumulated during the years 1906-1909 in connection with its mill
at Igo, about eight miles south of Clyde. The Igo mill was probably
abandoned after purchase of the mill at Clyde. On
the morning of June 7, 1913, the sawmill was destroyed by fire with an
estimated loss of $20,000. In mid-October 1913 the rebuilt mill was placed
in operation. In June 1914 the plant was remodeled to increase the cutting
capacity by installing machinery from the recently purchased mill of the
Lamar Trading Company, at Coral. On
May 10, 1921, Hugh L. White bought the holdings of the Lamar Lumber
Company at Clyde, Lamar County, for approximately $1,000,000. To operate
this property the Helen White Lumber Company, named for the Hugh
White's mother, was incorporated at Clyde, Lamar County on June 18, 1921 by
Mrs. J. J. White, Sr.; John J.
White; Hugh L. White; Beulah White Saunders; Allie White Alford, all of
McComb, and L. B. Sedgwick, of Columbia. Authorized capital stock was
$400,000. The sawmill bought from the Lamar Lumber Company was of the
circular type with a gang and had a cutting capacity of 100,000 feet per
day. L. W. Johnson was general manager. The mill cut out in 1927.
