History by Gil Hoffman: On
December 1, 1902, S. A. Jones leased a sawmill and 800 acres of pine
timber from the Singley family. The timber was located about six miles
northeast of Columbia, in the vicinity of Wolf Island and Graves creeks. The
lease on the mill and timber was to run for eight years, until December 1,
1910. The price agreed on was $5 per acre plus $1 per thousand feet cut. The
Jones sawmill had a cutting capacity of 15,000 feet per day. The lease on
the mill and timber was renewed on October 2, 1905 for five years with the
terms of the lease being slightly altered from the original. A
narrow gauge tramroad was built to log the mill in the latter part of 1904
and a 13-ton Shay purchased. Unfortunately, this engine was repossessed the
following year. Whether another engine was purchased is not known.
