History by Gil Hoffman: In
1928, T. Hofmann-Olsen, Inc., of New Orleans, bought 20,000 acres of
hardwood timber in Hancock County, MS, and St. Tammany Parish, LA, from the H.
Weston Lumber Company. A single band mill was built at Logtown, Hancock
County, which began sawing on January 15, 1929. The mill was located on the
banks of the Pearl River and contained and 8-foot band head saw with an
8-foot band resaw auxiliary. This mill cut chiefly white oak, magnolia and
gum, both for the domestic and export markets. In
addition to the mill at Logtown, the company was half-owner of the King
Creek Lumber Company, at New Willard, Texas and operated a small band
mill at Batchelor, Louisiana. Officers
of the company were T. Hofmann-Olsen, president; Ingemann Olsen, vice
president and general manager; Peter Dunn, vice president, and J. F.
Guenther, secretary. The T. Hofmann-Olsen company had been one of the main
exporters of hardwoods from New Orleans since about 1910.
