History
by Gil Hoffman:
In early 1909 the Norton Hardwood Lumber
Company completed a sawmill with a cutting capacity of 50,000 feet per day
at Richey, Sharkey County. Officers of the company were: W. G. Norton,
president and H. G. Norton, secretary and treasurer.
In November 1912 W. L. Crenshaw
and F. E. Gary bought the mill and timber of the Norton Hardwood Lumber
Company at Richey, Sharkey County, and formed the Crenshaw-Gary Lumber
Company as a partnership with headquarters in Memphis, TN. Logs were hauled
over a logging railroad to the Sunflower River, then barged to the company
mills at Richey. Two band mills were operated at Richey, cutting hardwoods
with a total capacity of 70,000 feet per day.
In July 1918 the partnership was
dissolved with F. E. Gary taking over mill No. 1 at Richey (35,000 feet
daily capacity) together with 920 acres of timber nearby and continuing
operation as the Crenshaw-Gary Lumber Company. On November 2, 1918 F. E.
Gary sold his mill, equipment, timber and lumber at Richey to the Kellogg
Lumber Company of Memphis.
W. L. Crenshaw retained mill No.
2 at Richey (also 35,000 feet daily capacity) and 3,400 acres of timber
along the Sunflower River near Midnight, MS. In August 1918 this timber was
sold to the Triangle Lumber Company of Memphis.
