History
by Gil Hoffman:
In late 1906 the Interstate
Lumber Company, of Curtiston, Alabama, acquired 15,000 acres of timber
land near Columbus, Mississippi, and built a sawmill at Columbus. In October
1909 the controlling interest in the company was sold to J. W. Brown and A.
E. Silverthorne. In 1910 the mill had a cutting capacity of 100,000 feet per
day.
In 1912 the company went into
receivership as a result of defaulting on a large mortgage and was sold at
receiver's sale on June 19, 1913 to the Security Trust Company, of Michigan
(holder of the mortgage), for $250,000. On July 9, 1913 the bank resold the
property to the Columbus Lumber Company, also of Michigan, for the same
amount. Besides a sawmill, the property included a planing mill, dry kilns,
machine shops, lumber sheds, office building, hotel, commissary, dwelling
houses, logging railroad and equipment and timber in Mississippi and
Alabama.
The Columbus Lumber Company
was incorporated in Michigan with capital stock of $100,000 and was
apparently an adjunct of the Security Trust Company. In May 1914 the company
bought 13,500 acres of timber land in Pickens, Lamar and Fayette counties,
Alabama. The mill was shut down in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I and
reopened in February 1916.
In September 1924 the company cut
out its timber in Lamar County, Alabama, after which the mill at Columbus
shut down. At that time the company was operating 32 miles of logging
railroad extending from Steens, MS, northward into Alabama to a point six
miles east of Gattman, MS.
