History by Gil Hoffman: On
January 17, 1917, Cecil O. Eure, of the Eure Lumber Company,
operating mills at Baxterville and New Hebron, purchased 24,000,000 feet of
timber in Pearl River County near Orvisburg from the Champion Lumber Company
for $100,000. The Cecil Lumber Company was organized at Orvisburg, in
April 1917, and built a circular sawmill with a cutting capacity of 40,000
feet per day near the site of the Champion Lumber Company's old mill. The
Cecil mill began sawing in June 1917,. Cecil O. Eure was president of the
company and R. C. Small, secretary. On August 7, 1920, the company sold all its holdings to the Southern Lumber & Timber Company, of Hillsdale, MS, for $350,000. The sawmill of the Wolf Creek Lumber Company was also included in the sale.
