History by Tony Howe The Amite Lumber Co. was organized in October 1915 by L. Z. Dickey, of McComb, who was also president and general manager of the Dickey Lumber Co. George T. Brown, proprietor of the McComb Machine Shop, became secretary and William McGolgan served as treasurer. The company's office was in McComb, but the mill was built in Liberty. The company leased rail from the Illinois Central Railroad to build a logging railroad on December 22, 1915. On October 25, 1917 the property of the Amite Lumber Co. was sold to the Natalbany Lumber Co. of Natalbany, Louisiana. "Southern Lumberman" reported that Natalbany would continue to operate the Amite Lumber Co. mill at Liberty, but it is not known how long it continued to operate. The timber could easily have been hauled to the Natalbany Lumber Co. railroad that extended into the same vicinity in Amite County.
