The line had been constructed by the Alabama & Mississippi Rivers Railroad Co. between 1852 and 1864 and sold to the Selma & Meridian Railroad on November 29, 1864.

The Alabama Central Railroad constructed 13.77 miles of railroad between York, Alabama and Lauderdale, Mississippi in 1878 and acquired trackage rights over the Mobile & Ohio Railroad between Lauderdale and Meridian, Mississippi, a distance of 18 miles.

The Alabama Central Railroad was sold to the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia Railroad on June 15, 1881. ETV&G became part of the Southern Railway on July 4, 1894. The branch between York and Lauderdale was abandoned in 1899.
