HISTORY:
The Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway was formed in 1997 to acquire
the rail line from Pensacola, FL to Kimbrough, AL from Burlington Northern
Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF). In 2003, BNSF also sold their rail line from
Kimbrough, AL to Columbus, MS to Alabama & Gulf Coast Ry, in addition to
an isolated section of former Alabama Tennessee & Northern RR line near
Mobile, AL. As a part of this deal, Alabama & Gulf Coast Ry gained
trackage rights on the BNSF line between Columbus, MS and Amory, MS, and on
Norfolk Southern RR between Kimbrough, and Mobile, AL.
The Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway was owned by States Rail, Inc., a
shortline holding company. This company was sold to RailAmerica in 2002,
which was then acquired by Genesee & Wyoming in late 2012
